A mileage tracker without GPS, on purpose

Every other mileage app leads with automatic trip detection. Odometer does not have it, and that is the feature — here is the honest version of the trade.

What automatic tracking actually costs

An app that notices you started driving has to be watching for it. In practice that means location access that stays on in the background, motion detection running all day, and a request to exempt the app from your phone's battery optimization — the request that exists precisely because the feature has a power cost.

Then there is the cleanup. Automatic detection cannot know why you drove, so every trip arrives unclassified and you swipe through them later deciding which were work. It also cannot always tell that you drove at all: passengers in someone else's car, a train journey, a walk that looked like traffic. Those become trips you have to find and delete.

The failure mode is worse than the inconvenience. A log with invented trips in it is not a log that helps you if anyone ever reviews it.

The permission you don't have to grant

Continuous location is one of the most sensitive permissions on a phone. Granting it to a mileage app means an app on your device knows where you were all day, every day, whether or not you were working.

Odometer does not ask for it. It can capture a single location snapshot when you log a trip or an expense, if you want that context, and it is optional — the app works completely without ever being granted location access. One reading, taken when you press the button. Not a trail.

Manual is not the same as inaccurate

The intuition is that GPS must be more precise than typing. It usually is not. An odometer reading is what the vehicle's own instrument says. A GPS trace is a reconstruction from satellite fixes that degrade in exactly the places people drive for work — multi-story parking garages, tunnels, dense city blocks — and it has to guess at the start and end of every journey.

What manual logging genuinely risks is not precision. It is completeness: the trip you meant to enter and forgot. That is a real cost and it is the honest one to name.

Two things blunt it. First, the entry has to be fast enough to do before you get out of the car — two numbers and a tap, which is the whole design of the logging screen. Second, forgetting has to be recoverable, so backdating in Odometer prefills the reading the vehicle actually had on the date you pick, and refuses an entry that would make the mileage run backwards in time.

Who this is wrong for

If you make thirty short stops a day and cannot reasonably note each one, an automatic tracker is the right tool and you should use one. Odometer is not trying to win that case.

It is built for the far more common shape: a handful of business trips a week, a driver who already keeps a notebook in the door pocket, and someone who would rather type two numbers than hand an app their location history and then audit its guesses every month.

Common questions

Why would I want a mileage tracker that does not use GPS?

Three reasons: nothing runs in the background so your battery is untouched, there are no phantom or misclassified trips to clean up later, and the app never needs permission to watch where you go all day. The trade is that you have to type two numbers per trip.

Do automatic mileage trackers drain your battery?

Continuous location and motion detection have a real power cost, which is why automatic trackers ask to be excluded from battery optimization. A manual log has no background component at all, so it costs nothing between trips.

Is a manual mileage log less accurate than GPS?

It is usually more accurate. An odometer reading comes off the vehicle's own instrument, while a GPS trace is an estimate of a path that degrades in tunnels, parking garages and cities. What manual logging risks is not precision but completeness — the trip you forget to enter.

Does Odometer use location at all?

Only if you ask it to, and only as a single snapshot. When you log a trip or an expense you can capture one location reading for context. There is no continuous tracking, no trail, and the app works fully without ever being granted location access.

What happens if I forget to log a trip?

You can add it later. Odometer prefills the odometer reading the vehicle had on the date you pick, so a backdated entry lands in the right place in the history rather than at the end of it.
